Protecting local navigation on the River Hamble

Introduction:

Handling approximately a quarter of the UK's seaborne trade, Associated British Ports (ABP) owns and operates 21 ports, including the Port of Southampton. Located close to the main international shipping lanes and less than 100 nautical miles from mainland Europe, the Port of Southampton is the UK's second largest container terminal, handling 39 million tonnes of cargo each year, as well as one million cruise passengers and 650,000 vehicles on ferries each year.

To ensure the safe passage of cruise and container ships, UK Dredging (UKD), a division of ABP, deploys advanced maintenance dredging vessels. A single dredger using trailing suction can draw up 2,300 cubic metres of silt from the Solent. This ensures tidal channels remain clear and navigable into the port.

The Issue:

Entering Southampton Water near Hamble-le-Rice is the River Hamble. The river is extremely popular with sailors and tourists, but caution is required at low water when shallow areas can make passage risky. The River Hamble Harbour Authority wanted assurance from ABP that maintenance dredging within the Solent would not impact on the safety or environment of the River Hamble. Particular concern was expressed regarding clear access for the many pleasure craft moored in the Hamble marinas.

To meet its corporate social responsibilities ABP needed a monitoring system which not only accurately reported shifts in tidal ranges, but which could present the data in a clear, concise manner. Sharing the data with the River Hamble Harbour Authority, or any other river user, was critical to demonstrate the maintenance dredging has no negative effect on the River Hamble or its marinas.

The Solution:

Wood & Douglas deployed its OpenNET 6000 series radios for ABP to create a telemetry system to manage the data acquisition of tidal levels in the River Hamble. The OpenNET 6000 delivers a complete low power radio interface with improved reliability to support a SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system which regularly polls the tidal monitors and then collates the data.

The gathered telemetry information is then processed through Wood & Douglas’ Remote Data Network Analysis (Remote-DNA). This web-based toolkit is fully compatible with OpenNet 6000 telemetry and is capable of collecting information from hundreds of analogue and digital connections. This provided more than enough coverage for ABP to source the necessary data from the River Hamble telemetry application which Remote-DNA then presents. The information on the tides is delivered into a database where it is quickly interpreted into easy to read graphics for sharing over the web.

OpenNET 6000 and Remote DNA provide APB with all the tools needed to collect, transmit and then present accurate findings in a clear, concise manner. This is enabling APB to definitively show that the Solent dredging is not impacting on the River Hamble, providing reassurance to all parties.
