Naval fire fight

Helmet Integrated Systems Ltd is one of the UK’s longest-established manufacturers of helmets specially designed for military, security and emergency roles. The helmets, combined with face shields, visors, respiratory and communications equipment, provide protection for personnel across a wide range of occupations.

Helmet Integrated Systems required a voice communications radio system to be designed and built to provide the highest standards of resilience for fire crews operating onboard naval vessels. The system demanded a full-duplex voice communications system and antenna to be built within the helmet to provide fire crews with full communications, but without hindering their ability to operate in potentially cramped and dangerous locations, where radio transmission can at best be difficult. To further add to the challenge, all electronics and mechanicals would have to be engineered to fit an existing helmet design.

The need for a retro-fitted custom radio module led supplier Key Radio Systems to approach Wood & Douglas. Wood & Douglas was able to create both the required electronics and the necessary mechanics to deliver a compact, voice communications system within the limitations of the existing helmet design. Wood & Douglas has manufactured and shipped more than 2,000 units since 2009, which have been deployed by fire teams in navies around the globe.
